* Figure Skaters from Russia --- due to suspension by the World Anti-Doping Agency, Russia’s name, flag and anthem are banned from the next two Olympics and any world championships through December 16, 2022. ISU Reports First Covid Case at World Championships(22 March 2021) Per an ISU statement release on 22 March, the first positive test for a participant at Worlds was discovered. "During one of the rounds of testing, one positive case was identified. The ISU and Organizing Committee will respect the privacy of the respective person and inform the remaining Event Participants internally of the situation," the statement said. The statement went on to say, "Health Regulations for Event participants is being followed namely: · the respective person will not be allowed to participate at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2021 · the respective person has been quarantined and all the required measures have been followed · Close contact persons were identified and isolated for further checks and appropriate measures were taken · OC Medical Team/ISU Medical Advisor assessed the situation and followed the ISU Health Regulations for Event Participants in harmony with the Swedish public health guidelines." This is perhaps not a surprising development, when the event has participants coming from so many countries of the world, many (even in Europe) where Covid is running out of control and a third wave is developing. It is indicative of the ISU's determination to not cancel Worlds a second time, that 2021 Worlds is being held despite taking place in country were case rates are now running at nearly 450 cases per day per million and few in the population are vaccinated, while 2020 Worlds were canceled when case rates were only 10 per million per day. Queue the music from Moulin Rouge, "The Show Must Go On." ISU Reports Second Covid Case at World Championships(24 March 2021) The ISU reported the second case of Covid at the Championship. In it's statement the ISU said: "During the rigorous testing procedures in place, a second positive case was identified. The ISU and Organizing Committee will respect the privacy of the respective person and inform the remaining Event Participants internally of the situation." "The ISU can confirm that both cases were detected following the PCR test upon arrival on site prior to accreditation. Consequently, neither person obtained an accreditation nor were they included in the competition bubble which remains secure." "As per the first case, the protocol as set out in the ISU Health Regulations for Event participants are being followed." So far then, the shields are holding firm, protecting the competition from Covid photon torpedoes. Third Covid Case Bursts the Bubble(26 March 2021) The ISU reported the third case of Covid at the Championship. While the previous two cases were persons who had just arrived in Stockholm and had not entered the bubble, the third case reported was inside the bubble. The ISU issued a statement with the following information about this case. "As part of the rigorous testing procedures, so far approximately 2000 PCR tests and 1000 antigen tests have been performed. Amongst these numerous tests, an additional positive case was identified. The ISU and Organizing Committee will respect the privacy of the respective person and inform the remaining Event Participants internally of the situation." "As per the previous cases, the protocols as set out in the ISU Health Regulations for Event participants are being followed." "The close contacts cases were quickly identified, investigated and tested. The ISU can confirm that the PCR tests of the close contact cases were all negative and the positive case is in quarantine as per the ISU Health Regulations and the Swedish authorities rules."
