Pang & Tong skated to Scott and Fran's Paso Doble, choreographed by Nikolai Morozov, for their Short Program. They both succeeded on their triple toe loops, which Tong fell on at Skate America. Their lift, spin and footwork got level 4, while their back outside death spiral was level 3 and the triple twist got level 2. They scored 68.57 which is 6.61 points higher then at Skate America. "I was satisfied with our performance today, I land my triple toe which is a big problem during our training these days," said Tong. Tong told the press that he nearly decided to quit this grand prix season because of a knee injury, "I can not do the jump at all before Skate America, I considered to quit, but my coach and partner encourage me to try. Now I think it was a good decision for us."
Pang & Tong's free skating is set to Edgar Elgar's “Variations on an Original Theme Enigma.” Tong singled both Axels, and after a level 1 twist, they went for a double toe loop just like they did in Skate America. Their forward outside death spiral, which earned no points in Skate America, was called level 1 here, while their pair spin was called an invalid elements and scored 0 points, due no credit being given for the required change of foot. The program was highlighted with 2 throw jump and difficult lifts at level 4. Describing their performance, Tong said, "It’s not our best performance today, we made several mistakes. Now it is difficult for me to do the triple jump as the third element in the program, so we will work on the program in the coming days, try to put triple toe in this program, and show you in the GPF.’

Cup of China was Yuko Kavaguti & Alexander Smirnov’s first Grand Prix competition this season. They came as defending champion to Cup of China. Last year, they defeated the Chinese pair Dan Zhang & Hao Zhang in this rink.
Skating to “The Blue Danube”, Kavaguti & Smirnov started with a level 3 twist and landed side-by-side triple toe loop. Their throw triple loop was executed nicely, but they got base level on their back outside death spiral. "I’m happy with our performance today, for this is our first competition this season. We skated with emotions and I think the audience enjoy our performance tonight,’ said Kavaguti.
In heir free skating program, set to "February," Smirnov doubled his first triple toe loop in a jump sequence and stumbled on the second. Later, Kavaguti she lost her balance when landing a triple Salchow. "We made some mistakes today, so we will practice to show a clean program in the future competition," Kavaguti said afterwards at a press conference.

Kesenia Stolbova & Fedor Klimov did their side-by-side triple toe loops and their lift nicely, but only received level 1 on r back outside death spirals and footwork. There were also small mistakes with the twist lift and throw jump. They got 56.66 and placed 5th after Short Program.
The young Russian pair skated to "The Addams Family" for their long program. They landed a triple toe loop - double toe loop - double toe loop jump combination, and completed a triple Salchow throw jump and a double Axel. On throw triple Lutz, however, Stolbova fell. 115.89 points for the Free Skate was enought for them to defeat the Canadian and Chinese pairs and move into 3rd place. "We are so happy with our first medal in grand prix, but we also made mistake today, I believe we could do better in the future," said Fedor.

The 2006 Olympic silver medalist Hao Zhang and his new partner Cheng Peng made their ISU event debut in Cup of China. His former partner Dan Zhang retired this April and came to watch their competition this time. "I was satisfied with my new partner. She is clever and worsk hard. But she is still young and has lots to improve. But I will help her and grow with her together. Our target is to go to Sochi Olympics," Zhang said to the media.

Nathalie Pechalat & Fabian Bourzat won Cup of China for the second time since 2010, in their 4th appearance at Cup of China. They first attended the event held fort he first time in 2003, and placed 7.
The European Champions and World bronze medalists’ Short Dance is set to "French Waltz" and "Can Can." Their twizzles, straight line lift and the first polka sequence all got level 4, and they scored 69.15 points to place 1st in the short dance. "The first competition of the season always difficult to do as well as in practice. We are in good shape for the Short Dance, and hope the audience enjoy our performance today. But we will check the program with the competition and improve," said Bourzat.
Their free dance is set to a Rolling Stones medley. Almost all their elements got level 4 except for a level 3 diagonal in hold step sequence and a level 3 circular step sequence. "China is a lucky place for us. Every time we came to China, we could get good results. It’s great for us to start a season with our performance here," said Bourzat.

Defending Cup of China champions, Ekaterina Bobrova & Dmitri Soloviev placed 2nd this year. They performed to Russian movie music for their Short Dance, and got level 4s on their twizzles and lift. "We think our performance is more emotional than at Skate America, but unfortunately we did not got more points. Maybe we should work hard to improve the section of Polka, but we don’t have much time," said Soloviev.
Their Free Dance is to very narrative music “Man with a Harmonica” and “Tosca.” Six of their eight elements got level 4, but the circular step sequence and diagonal in hold step sequence were called level 2, compared to both called level 3 in Skate America. "We worked more on our program after Skate America, made some small changes. But we think we can be better in the future,” said Soloviev.

Cup of China was also the second Grand Prix of this season for Kaitlyn Weaver & Andre Poje. They improved their element levels since Skate America in the Short Dance, getting level 4 on their twizzles, rotational lift and the first sequence of the Yankee Polka. "We focused on the Polka and footwork which lost point in Skate America, but we didn't have time to change more," Poje said. He told the press that they chose the music from the movie "sound of music" because that is his grandmothers’ favorite movie.
Weaver & Poje's Free Dance to “Humanity in Motion” improved a little on points compared with Skate America, but they still had some problems on the level of the spins, and the circular step sequences and diagonal in hold step sequence. They placed 3rd again as they did at Skate America. "We didn’t have so much time from Skate America to here, but we fixed some of the elements. But the spin is still frustrating, we want higher level on it," said Poje.
