Wagner Ready to
Rock in Barcelona - If there would be one way to describe Ashley
Wagner, it would probably be the fact that the girl’s got guts.
Shibutanis Set to
Step it Up in Spain - This weekend, Maia and
Alex Shibutani are looking to make their mark at the Grand Prix Finals in
Barcelona, Spain, hoping to possibly claim a medal and continue evolving
as world-class ice dancers as they embark on the new 2018 Olympic cycle.
Russia Dominates 2014
Grand Prix, Sends Nine Entries to Final - Russian
skaters continued their domination of international figure skating,
qualifying for nine of the twenty-four possible entries in the 2014 Grand
Prix Final. Russian qualified entries in each of the four
disciplines, with Russian ladies earning four of the six slots in that
event. In comparison, The U.S. qualified a total of four entries,
with two entries each in Ladies and Dance. The U.S. count beat by
one the three entries each earned by Canada, China and Japan.
2014 Grand Prix Final Begins with the
Junior Short Programs - The Grand Prix Final in Barcelona, Spain, started on
Thursday, December 11, with the short programs and the short dance
of the Juniors. In each category six competitors or couples are
qualified. Skaters from Russia won 12 of the 24 junior spots this
year, those
from Japan five, from Canada four, from China and South Korea one
each and from the USA also only one. Some years ago the USA had gained
around half of the spots, but no longer.
The competition is being held in the Barcelona
International Convention Center, located on the shore of the Mediterranean
Seam. The ice surface is a temporary installation with seating that
is also temporary and accommodates 5500 spectators. The unofficial
count for spectators for the four Junior segments in the after noon is
1800. The segments were held in the order, Ladies, Dance, Men and
Pairs.
Free Programs
Conclude Junior Events, Russia Wins Eight of Twelve Medals
- On
the second day of the Grand Prix Final in Barcelona the four free programs
concluded the Junior events, followed in the evening by the Senior short
program for Men and the Short Dance for Ice Dance. Russian skaters
won eight of the twelve medals in the Junior events, including a sweep of
the Pairs event.
