Notes on the Free Dance
Bourne and Kraatz needed to place well here to position themselves for Worlds, and did
they ever, winning the free dance to take an unexpected victory over Krylova and
Ovsiannikov on a 5-2 split. Their free dance is a traditional big band type number skated
to several different dance rhythms. They skated with enthusiasm, but also had one major
stumble that almost landed Bourne on the ice. Krylova and Ovsiannikov's dance to
Katchaturian's Masquerade Waltz is a more interesting and difficult dance, but it did not
find favor with a majority of the judges here. Anissina and Peizerat placed third with
their eastern flavor dance which now is skated in more modest costumes. The program
includes difficult movements and lifts but not particularly difficult steps. Romanova and
Yaroshenko were able to move up one place with their dynamic interpretation of music from
"Zorba the Greek", which they are using again this year. Lobacheva and Averbukh
skated a lighthearted, pleasant enough rock and roll dance number, however it lacked
adequate difficulty to contend for a medal.
Notes on the Compulsory Dance and Original Dance
In a bit of a surprise upset, Bourne and Kraatz outscored the favorites entering the
competition, Krylova and Ovsiannikov, in the Golden Waltz. This was the first time that
Bourne and Kraatz have won a compulsory dance in international competition, and represents
a significant step forward for them. In the Original dance they again challenged Krylova
and Ovsiannikov for the lead, but this time came up short and ended up second in the OD
and second after the OD. After the top two teams things turned out pretty much as expected
with the only excitement a fall by Romanova near the end of the first pattern of the CD.
