The first final of the new ISU Junior Series took place in Lausanne, Switzerland, on March 5-8. The new Junior Series, based on the successful model of the ISU Champions Series, comprises 6 international events held throughout Europe between August and November. Points were awarded on the basis of the final placement in each competition and the top eight ladies and men together with the top six pairs and dance qualified for the final.
Switzerland as the host of this competition was permitted a "wild card" and entered Christel Borghi in the ladies event. Victoria Volchkova (RUS) was entered in the ladies event, but was injured and did not skate.
Julia Soldatova, the current World Junior Champion, won the ladies competition, in front of Amber Corwin, and teammate Elena Pingachova. The one-three result for the Russian ladies highlights the continued improvement of that country's women in recent years.
Timothy Goebel, absent from the World Junior Championships because of a hip injury, came back to win the men's competition in Lausanne, after being fourth in the short program. Ivan Dinev, who place 11th in the recent Olympic Games, won the silver medal in front of Matthew Savoi, third. In winning the long program Goebel landed a quad Salchow, making him the first U.S. man to land a quad in international competition, and the first man to land a quad Salshow in international competition.
In the pairs event, Junior World Champions Obertas and Palamarchuck won the gold medal after being only fourth in the short program. Second were the Russian team of Maksuta and Zhovnirsky, also the silver medalists at the Junior World Championships in St. John, Canada. After winning the short program, Vlandis and Guzman slipped to third in the long program to win the bronze medal.
World Junior silver medlaists, Faiella and Milo won the ice dance event ahead of Podtykova and Petukhov and teammates Ottaviani and Scali.
