by Marcia Burchstead The couples skated two compulsory dances; the Tango and Paso Doble, fairly easy ones. The placements only changed for four of the 12 couples between the dances with Meryl Davis & Charlie White representing Detroit SC winning both. They had finished sixth last year at Nationals. Natalia Dubova coaches Maxim Zavozine, son of the former Soviet international competitors Garinina and Zavozin, who with his new partner Stephanie Ellis placed fourth. He had placed 12th last year with former partner Morgan Matthews. Last years bronze medallists, Sarah Solomon & Benjamin Cohen were in second while the eighth place couple in 2001, Eleanor Langhans & Joseph Braasch claimed third after the CDs. |

Matthews and Zavozin in only their first season together are making a name for themselves having previously won the Free Dance at the Lake Placid International Dance Competition held last August and the Eastern Sectional Championships sweeping the compulsory dances and free dance. The leaders going into the Free Dance segment, Meryl Davis and Charlie White suffered a fall, which placed them third, although one judge still ranked them first, and second overall. The USFSA plans to announce later in the week which of the Novice competitors have been selected to take part in the Triglav competition to be held in April in Jesenice, Slovenia or the Gardena Spring Trophy |
