Naomi Lang & Peter Tchernyshev repeated as dance champions, but not without some warning bells going off that this may be their last year at the top. In only one of the four dances ( the Yankee Polka) did they receive unanimous first place marks. Their original dance was fast and strong and their free dance, to "Spenta La Stella", was skated with passion. The routine was choreographed by Christopher Deane and was well done, for a U.S. couple. At least two other European teams are using this music this year and both teams do it significantly better. Near the end of the program (at 3:20 into the program) Tchernychev briefly spun out but did not fall. When they were done the arena clock indicated 3: 46 which would have required a time deduction, but afterwards the referee said that the clock had been started late and their performance was within the required time limit. Despite the brief error by Tchernychev the team received one mark of 6.0 in the second set of marks.
Placing second in each of the four dances and second overall were Jamie Silverstein & Justin Pekarek, the 1999 junior dance champions. They received one first place ordinal in the Quickstep, two in the OD, and two in the free dance. Their second place finish this year ties the record for the best placement by a junior champion team in their first year at the senior level, a record that had stood previously for nearly 50 years. Their compulsory dances were skated well and their OD was hot. The free dance was a fast swirling number presented with control and flair. By the end of the competition they left no doubt they have the potential to take the championship next year and could prove to be one of the best U.S. dance teams to come along in many a year.
Deborah Koegel & Oleg Fediukov won the bronze medal in a see-saw battle with Beata Handra & Charles Sinek. Koegel & Fediukov placed third in both compulsory dances but were fourth in the OD which temporarily dropped them into fourth place overall. In a close decision in the free dance (a 5-4 split) they placed third in the free dance to overtake Handra & Sinek and win the bronze medal. In both the OD and free dance Koegel & Fediukov skated with long edges and good flow while Handra & Sinek tended towards faster choppier steps with more complexity. Their OD was incredibly fast and complex almost to the point of being frantic and it was the dance in which they received their best marks. As a sidelight, this is the first U.S. Nationals in which Fediukov competed as a U.S. citizen, having obtained his citizenship in January prior to the start of the championships.
