The compulsory dances kicked off the championship level events tonight in American Airlines Center and the audience attendance at this competition phase was abysmal. The first dance was the Quickstep followed by the Tango Romantica. These two dances combined count for 20% of the total score. With a twelve-team field, twenty-four compulsories were performed and judged. The Quickstep is skated in Kilian position throughout with both partners skating the same steps for four sequences and was first skated in the 1930's. The Tango Romantica requires deep edges with deliberate and precise movements for two sequences and was created in the 1970's by Russians Ludmilla Pakhomova, Alexander Gorshkov and Elena Tchaikovskaya.

The Original Dance, which counts for 30% of the score, takes place on Wednesday, January 15 at 3:10 PM. Nearly all the males chose black for costumes in both dances. For the Tango, the ladies primarily chose shades of red or black for their skating dresses.

Naomi Lang & Peter Tchernyshev, the four-time national champions who train with Nicholai Morosov in Connecticut, had only been training again for the past five weeks to get ready for competition. They missed this season due to Lang's ankle problems with a cyst on her left Achilles' tendon. She iced her foot down after this competition phase. "I was feeling it some tonight for the first time in five weeks but it isn't hurting my skating," she said. Tchernyshev feels that they are skating at 75% of where they were at the 2002 World championships while Lang rates them at 80%. "We are hoping to peak for the 2003 World Championships," he said. Tchernyshev brought back the "Staying Alive" disco look with his white suit for the Quickstep tonight which was performed with crispness and good speed.

Tanith Belbin and Bejamin Agosto under the tutelage of Igor Shpilband had a very strong quick step with excellent speed and smoothness of execution but this duo only took two ordinals from the champions at this stage of competition. They were less dominant in the Tango Romantica and only took one first place ordinal for that dance. They are solidly in second place at this point but could present a stronger challenge to the leaders in the original dance and free dance competition phases. "Every year there is someone challenging. You have to look behind you and keep running ahead. We skated two solid dances today," said Lang.

Melissa Gregory and her husband, Denis Petukhov who train in Chicago with Oleg Epstein, were solidly in third place in both dances, receiving 18 third place ordinals. Petukhov appears recovered from the knee injury that plagued him at Skate Canada earlier this season. This duo skated close together with strong turns and match well together. This is only their second season and they continue improving.

Newcomers to the senior level, Loren Galler-Rabinowitz and David Mitchell who were last year's junior champions, earned fourth place. This duo had six fourth place ordinals for the Quickstep and six fourth place ordinals for the Tango Romantica. "It hasn't hit me yet about our results at this point; I am elated," she said. Galler-Rabinowitz was also selected as a member of the USFSA's 2003 Scholastic team.

Christie Moxley and Aleksandre Kirsanov train in Delaware with Karen Ludington and placed in fifth in both compulsories. They placed third at 2003 Eastern Sectionals and he was born in Moscow, Russia. Their costumes for the Quickstep did not mesh well as he wore a Spanish costume and hers would have gone well with a Charleston. He used his costume again for the Tango Romantica and she wore a costume where the black and red sleeves did not blend effectively with the silvery green bodice but at least they went with her black skirt. They were a little slower than the top teams for their quickstep.

Kendra Goodwin and Chris Obzansky who also train in Delaware moved up from seventh place in the Quickstep to sixth place in the Tango Romantica and overall. They are coached by Jerry Santoferrara and Yovanny Durango and had a true Spanish flavor to their Tango, with strong angular movements and their Quickstep had good speed, unison and close together feet.

Emilie Nussear and Mathew Gates also train with Nicolai Morosov but appeared very disappointed by problems in their second dance. These 2003 Eastern Sectional champions were sixth in the Quickstep but then fell to ninth place in the Tango Romantica, after a big tumble near the end of their second compulsory. He went down first, then Nussear, she then glared at her partner as they quickly recovered and continued. At program's end, they left the ice without bowing and skipped the kiss and cry area. Is there trouble in paradise with this partnership? They skated a strong Quickstep but just didn't seem to interact well for their Tango, which lacked passion today. They finished in a tie for seventh place overall.

Tied for seventh place are newcomers as partners, Hillary Gibbons and Justin Pekarek who train in Maryland with Genrich Sretenski and Elizabeth Coates. This duo skated a nice Quickstep in attractive blue costumes but their Tango lacked passion despite that their romantic relationship off the ice.

The Championship level Original Dance for this season, "Memories of a Grand Ball," features a choice of two or three rhythms with skaters selecting waltz, polka, march or gallop for a two and a half minute program. The costumes took a step back in time to a more graceful era, with most of the men opting for an old fashioned tuxedo style suit and the ladies choosing an elegant dress with a skirt that highlighted the turns and twizzles.

Championship Dance now looks to be a showdown between four-time national champions, Naomi Lang and Peter Tchernyshev and the current ice dance leaders after the Original Dance, Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto for the Freedance. By taking the Original Dance, this was the first time Belbin and Agosto had bested Lang and Tchernyshev in competition. "We have taken an ordinal or two before but this is the first time we finished ahead in competition but we know things are not over yet. We need to skate our best for the Freedance," said Belbin.

Belbin and Agosto threw down the gauntlet from the start of their dance, grabbing the crowd's attention and keeping it throughout. They had excellent ice coverage, good speed and made you believe you were inside a grand ballroom. They took eight of the nine judges with only judge seven (Richard Dalley of Grosse Ile, Michigan) unenchanted by their performance as he gave them their only second place ordinal. Their waltz was graceful and strong while their polka captured the polka flavor with just a hint of whimsy. Agosto turned 21 years old today. "I couldn't really ask for more today, we are very happy with how we skated," said Agosto. "I reminded him we have an early practice on Thursday so he can't go out and celebrate turning 21 today yet," added Belbin. Their waltz had the only vocal track of the entire competition. "The vocal helps our expression," she explained.

Lang and Tchernyshev had a pleasant performance but it paled in comparison and only received one first place ordinal. They also had the disadvantage of skating earlier in seventh position while Belbin and Agosto skated in the last group, 10th in the starting order. Their lifts were effective but the seemed slow on their March portion, and strong for their waltz. "I played the part of a military soldier who meets a pretty girl who flirts with him," explained Tchernyshev. "I am very happy with how we skated today," added Lang.

Melissa Gregory and Denis Petukhov remained in third place with their romantic waltz and polka that featured strong lifts. "We have made changes to our original dance one month ago and we are really happy with the program now," she said. Loren Galler-Rabinowitz and David Mitchell in their first year of senior competition, held onto fourth place in the original dance and overall. They look to have a very promising future, especially as they gain more seasoning on the senior level.

Placement changes also occurred with Christie Moxley and Aleksandre Kirsanov dropping to sixth place in the original dance but hanging on to fifth place overall at this stage of competition. Their dance featured a good footwork section.

Emilie Nussear and Mathew Gates had a better day and moved back up from seventh overall to fifth in the original dance and sixth place overall. This team seemed more on the same page today, which helped them gain back some of the ground lost in the Tango Romantica.

Kendra Goodwin and Chris Obzansky dropped to seventh place in the original dance, which lowered them to seventh place overall. Hillary Gibbons and Justin Pekarek slipped to ninth place in the original dance which put them in eighth place overall but this couple skated with more personality today.

The Freedance takes place Friday, January 17 at 2:30 PM in American Airlines Center and counts for 50% of the total score. Either of the top two teams could go home the national champions.

U.S. ice dance continues to be increasing as a melting pot of nationalities. Eight of the twelve teams in this event have a partner who was born outside the United States. Three hailed originally from Russia (Peter Tchernyshev - St. Petersburg), (Denis Petukhov - Kirov), and (Aleksander Kirkanov - Moscow). Vitaly Shalin was born in Odessa, Ukraine, Kendra Goodwin was born in Java, Indonesia and Tanith Belbin's birth certificate shows Kingston, Ontario. Eleanor Langhans claims Valencia, Spain while Mathew Gates originally called Hitchin, England home. Tchernyshev now has American citizenship. Gates and Petukhov expect to have their U.S. citizenship prior to the 2006 Olympic Games but Belbin would need Congressional help to compete at the 2006 Olympic games although she now has green card approval.

The Championship dance event was not "all shook up" in Dallas but instead Naomi Lang and Peter Tchernyshev defended their four-time national title and are now five-time national dance champions. They skated to "Still Lovin' You" by the Scorpions, skating first in the last group of five skating teams. They made a mistake in their footwork section, a small slip causing a pause in the action before starting again. "It was a real fight today. Neither of us skated a flawless performance but I know Naomi and I gave it our all," he said. "When I saw the results I was so excited. This was a stressful week and a stressful season for us. We were happy we could go out and put out all these strong performances," she added.

Lang has recovered from her tendonitis but still has a cyst on her left ankle. "I want to have it removed after this season ends so it doesn't cause me problems again later so I will have surgery," said Lang.

Immediately following in the skating order were the Original Dance leaders, Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto skating their Elvis Presley medley. On their beginning lift, Belbin kicked him in the head and things continued on from there as they got ahead of their music. "We made a very large mistake and it definitely cost us," said Belbin. This program has lots of difficulty but they did not execute it all tonight. "Next time," said Agosto.

The magic wasn't there tonight and further problems culminated during their circular footwork section. "We practiced a lot on the Olympic size rink for their internationals and this is an NHL size smaller rink. The placement of the circle moved and they pushed it over a little too much. They were forced to turn early and went in slightly different directions so she bumped into him, "explained their coach Igor Shpilband. She missed a large section of their footwork until they recovered. Agosto added," There are so many steps, there is no room to be wrong and it's hard to get back but we kept going."

The sparse crowd sentenced them to solitary confinement as the audience had an eerie stony silence for their "Jailhouse Rock" and other Elvis tunes. This number had been a big hit in Spokane, Washington for Skate America but it did not fly in Texas for the American Airlines Center. Songs included in the medley were "Heartbreak Hotel", "All Shook Up", "Jailhouse Rock", and "I Want to be your Teddy Bear."

Belbin and Agosto did not check into "Heartbreak Hotel" after missing this opportunity to take over as national champions. "The TV camera has been following me around, hoping I would cry but there is no shame with finishing behind champions like Naomi and Peter. This will be a learning experience for us," said Belbin. Agosto and his girlfriend Merry planned to celebrate his 21st birthday this weekend in downtown Dallas as he turned 21 on January 15.

Melissa Gregory and Denis Petukhov skated a romantic Freedance to "Snow" by Craig Armstrong with strong and smooth lifts and turns. They earned eight third place marks and only judge number 8, Kanae Taawa of San Carlos, California gave them a fifth place. This is their second year to receive the bronze medal at championship level and have only been competing together for two seasons. "Crowd size doesn't affect us that much as competitors. It does help when the audience gets into your performance. The crowd that was there was supportive and warm," she said.

Loren Galler-Rabinowitz and David Mitchell skated a charming Freedance to "The Mummy" soundtrack, showing maturity beyond their years. They remained in fourth place for a pewter medal after receiving seven fourth place ordinals and one-third place. Judge number 2, Carol Wolley of Alvord, Texas was the only judge to give them a lower ordinal, putting them in a surprising sixth in the marks.

Emilie Nussear and Mathew Gates placed sixth with their "Four Seasons" Freedance which moved them up to fifth place overall. This team does not seem the best match in body type and skating style so we wonder about their future as a team.

Christie Moxley and Aleksander Kirsanov had a techno number to "Orbitals & Kiko and the Lavender Moon" and he seemed the more comfortable of the two with this type of dance. They lost a place, finishing seventh in the Freedance and sixth overall. Kimberly Navarro and Robert Shmalo moved up to fifth in the Freedance with their latin music selections by Anjelipse Kijo but they had earlier buried themselves in the compulsories by finishing tenth in both compulsories. They placed seventh overall.
