Deductions in Original Dance

The original dance makes up 30% of the total in the ice dance event.  The dance consists of required elements that must be completed within a time in the range of 2 minutes 20 seconds to 2 minutes 40 seconds.  Vocal music may be used.

Other Technical Restrictions
  • Musical introduction without beat or melody exceeding ten seconds
  • Pattern not proceeding in a generally clockwise or counter-clockwise direction
  • Pattern crosses long axis other than at ends of rink
  • Toe steps, small jumps and hops exceeding 1/2 rotation
  • Both skates of either partner off the ice (except in permitted lifts or spins)
  • Excessive skating on two feet except in two permitted highlights of no longer than 5 seconds duration.
  • Kneeling or sliding on both knees during program
  • Separations other than to change handhold or to execute required step sequence
  • Permitted separations more than 2 arm lengths apart
  • Hand-in-hand positions with extended arms
  • Pushing or pulling partner by the boot, blade or leg other than in required lifts and spins
  • More than two stops
  • Permitted stops longer than permitted duration (5 seconds for one, 10 seconds for another)
  • Posing or skating with a hand or hands on the ice

Deductions for fall are taken from the first mark only (Composition) unless it affects the presentation in which case it may also be reflected in the second mark; i.e., the deduction is always taken in the first mark, but the second mark (Presentation) can also be reduced if the fall affects the presentation.

If a fall makes it impossible to recognize a required element then the element is treated as omitted and the deduction for an omission is taken (0.5) from the first mark.
