One foot Axel jump: A normal rotation edge jump. The skater takes off from a forward outside edge, and lands on the back inside side edge of the same foot. A single one foot Axel has one and one-half rotation in the air, a double has two and one-half, and a triple has three and one-half.

The one foot Axel is a listed jump as jumps may be landed on either foot.

Open block: A formation in synchronized skating consisting of two or more lines of skaters one behind the next, in which the skaters are arranged in a two dimensional pattern which includes empty spaces; e.g., a formation in the shape of a hollow rectangle.

Open judging: The process of judging where the judges' marks are displayed immediately after each skater performs.

Opening pose:  The position the skater takes immediately prior to the start of their program.

Skaters begin their programs in a pose of their choice at a stationary position on the ice.  Pairs and ice dancers may begin their programs either together or apart.  When the name of the skater is announced they have a specific time interval to take their opening position.  At that point the music official will start playing the skater's music.

Ordinal: The integer number that designates the order of placement of a skater within the group of skaters.

Original dance: An ice dance of original choreography, 2 minutes in duration, that formed a part of some ice dancing events in the past.

Original set pattern dance: A set pattern dance of original choreography that formed a part of some ice dancing events in the past.

Outside edge: The edge of the skate blade farthest from the center line of the body.

Overhead lifts: The pair lifts in which one or both hands the lifting partner is/are raised above shoulder level, usually with the intention of fully extending the supporting arm(s), and in which the lifted partner is not released in the air during the takeoff of the lift. The lifted partner may be released during transitions between positions and during the dismount.  Overhead lifts are subdivided into five groups.
